Free Public Forum Series

The Centre for Public Policy is relaunching its FREE PUBLIC FORUMS in 2012 with a series of reflections from key public figures on the state of public policy, public services and public management.

The Series will be opening with:

’Governance hotspots’ in Victoria’s public services

Speaker: Mr Des Pearson, Auditor-General, Victoria

Respondent: Mr Grant Hehir, Secretary, Department of Treasury and Finance

Tuesday 6th March 2012, 5.30 -7.30pm

We are delighted that Victoria’s Auditor-General, Mr Des Pearson has agreed to speak at the first public forum on the theme of ‘Governance Hotspots’ in Victorian public services on 6th March 2012 at 5.30 at the University of Melbourne. Mr Pearson is Australia’s longest serving sitting Auditor-General and has had a public service career spanning four decades and three Australian jurisdictions.

Each year, VAGO undertakes a rigorous programme of performance and financial audits of public sector bodies. Since 2009 the Office has interrogated this extensive evidence base to identify common weaknesses and problems in public service design and delivery across the public sector.

VAGO’s analysis focuses on a number of key questions:

Are public sector managers experiencing the same kinds of problems in different contexts?
What are the most common challenges to good management and good accountability?
Are there patterns emerging from the audits that highlight challenges across the public sector and what can managers, leaders and legislators do about them?

In this forum the Auditor-General will identify the key themes to emerge from the review of 2010-11 and lead a discussion on what can be and is being done to address the challenges they raise.

The forum will be of interest to anyone involved in designing and delivering public services, as well as those with particular responsibilities for policy and system design, performance and risk management. It will also be relevant for service users and students interested in how to access good evidence about public service performance.

The forum will take place on Tuesday 6th March 2012 from 5.30 -7.30pm at:

Melbourne Brain Centre Auditorium
The Kenneth Myer Building (No. 144)
Cnr Royal Parade & Genetics Lane
The University of Melbourne
Parkville Campus.
